This year, the focus of our event is social inclusion in schools. We want to, through our panel discussion, share the ways that all students, including those with disabilities, can both be and feel safe, be and feel meaningfully included and have and feel sense of belonging in schools. Our discussion will be focused around the “plumbing” of inclusion in schools, as one of our panellists calls it, essentially being focused on the practical ways that schools can make sure all students, including those who are more likely to be socially vulnerable, can be included, not only to prevent bullying, but to make sure every student is a valued community member.

There will be a heavy focus on peer circles, and we’ll hear from an expert in the rights of people with disability, as well as the mother of a child with Down Syndrome, Catia Malaquias OAM, a parent of two neurodivergent children and state coordinator of Square Peg Round Whole, Symone Wheatley-Hey, a Program Coordinator for Inclusion who oversees peer circles, Ms Kate Reid and two students, year 12 student Innes, who has been involved in supporting disabled peers in peer circles, and year 10 student Lily, a student with a disability who has both been supported by a peer circle, and has supported friends due to the community based aspects of peer circles. We encourage you to come along and hear from them! You can read more about them below!

The participation of kids at our event is highly encouraged, and the event will include lots of student-friendly activities which will start after the panel discussion!

The event is free, but we ask that, if possible, tickets are booked in advanced so we can estimate numbers for catering as food will be available. Entry is still allowed without a ticket however, so don’t stress!

We really hope to see you there! Additional information is attached below!
